The Hand of Iris
EIGHT HAIR-RAISING TALES TO HONOR THE HAND OF IRIS
Marcy is a bundle of nerves when visiting her girlfriend Azura’s place, not just because she is meeting the family for the first time, but because she and her brother have heard rumours that a legendary treasure is hidden inside the grand family’s manor. While trying to figure out how to sneak her brother inside to steal the treasure, Marcy is approached by many of Azura’s family members as they tell eight spine-chilling tales born from their dark imaginations.
One tale shows how a man contends with a monster skulking the streets by a seedy hotel. Another, a woman who is sensitive to sunlight that must blend in with a society of vampires in the polar north. Employees in an animal testing facility find themselves besieged by a feral werewolf. A woman who believes herself to be a saint finds herself confronted with the sins she committed for the sake of self-righteousness. All those and other stories are told as Marcy explores the house of the elusive Bender-Vee family.

The Meaning of Mischief Night
A lively adventure in the land of the dead!
Every kingdom has their pests: rats, locusts, flies, and the like. But Zora’s kingdom of Piosanto has a whole different level of pests that must be endured every year: ghosts. These ghosts cause no end of trouble for the people of Piosanto and have left the orphanage Zora grew up in left in ruin.
Frustrated with seeing her world crumble around her, Zora decides that she can no longer stand by and watch the ghosts destroy everything. So, she puts her budding tinkering skills to the test and creates a weapon specially crafted to take out the invading phantoms. However, she finds herself in over her head once the invasion begins and nearly falls victim to the revenant forces.
Even though her crusade falls apart, the Queen approaches Zora to accompany her best soldiers to take the fight back to the Ghost Realm itself. Their mission is to vanquish Enochtis, the Ghost King and spearhead of Mischief Night and put an end to the chaos once and for all. But as Zora finds herself in the fabled Ghost Realm, she discovers secrets about the origins of Mischief Night that will change the course of history for both the kingdoms of the living and the dead.

“ This novel offers much: it’s richly visual (with illustrations by Olive Reekie), deliciously weird, witty, kinetic, and warmhearted. THE MEANING OF MISCHIEF NIGHT will appeal to teenagers, ambitious middle-grade readers, all who love Halloween, and pacifists of any age.
R. Van Brabant’s THE MEANING OF MISCHIEF NIGHT is a fun read—lively, colorful, witty, and packed with mostly nonviolent action.”

“ A really well done horror thriller novel, this does what I was hoping for from the description. It was so well written and kept me invested. I was on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed what was going on. R. Van Brabant has a great writing style and I look forward to where the author goes next.”

“ A short sharp shock of horror that can be readily consumed in one sitting, R. Van Brabant’s debut novel, RUSALKA, shows great promise…there are passages of effective prose and the author displays a keen eye for grisly details. ”
